Do you want to help increase your child’s confidence in reading and spelling by learning phonics and letter-to-sound correspondences?
Research has shown that success is greatly improved for beginner reading when a child has mastered all the foundational knowledge required, including learning sounds, decoding letters, handwriting, and building vocabulary.
Often times, children progress through to the next level of schooling without actually mastering phonics, and this can even continue into later primary years! Phonics is taught incrementally beginning with one-to-one letter correspondences and progressing to one syllable words then onto multisyllabic words.
The following are activities that will be covered during the lessons:
*phonemic awareness with practical examples
*the phonics alphabet
*phonics from letter-to-sound (for reading)
*phonograms and word families
*follow an easy-to-difficult sequence for learning phonics
*pre-handwriting skills for the younger children
*handwriting – letter formation and penmanship
*how to syllabicate words
*strategies for improving spelling
*reading short stories
The teacher for these classes, Tania, has been an ESL teacher for the past 15 years and has a special interest in teaching and researching phonics for beginner reading.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the July school holidays for Years K-2 from 10am and Years 2-4 from 12pm. These will be held at our Drummoyne centre.
These classes work best if your child can attend all four classes; however, if you are away for one of the weeks during the holidays, there is still the option to do two classes for either week one or week two.
Classes are 90 minutes and cost $54 plus GST. To book your child’s spot, visit: www.bookeo.com/leapintoliteracy
